Tanzy Owen
Food and Sustainability Co-Ordinator - Masterchef2016 Melbourne Fellowship
I found a stronger sense of self, of others, of change and of possibility.
What was the most valuable thing you got out of CSL?
I found a stronger sense of self, of others, of change and of possibility.
Why are you passionate about sustainability?
My life has been spent immersed in nature and having an understanding and love of natural systems. When I was travelling in my early twenties I started to realise how we worked against these systems, and how damaging the human footprint was on the planet. There is no waste in nature, and so witnessing the abundance of rubbish and stuff on city streets in countries that don't have our convenient waste disposal systems made me realise I needed to focus my energy on ways that we can reduce the human impact.
How did CSL play a role in directing your current path or project?
It gave me the confidence to have conversations with amazing people, to learn from those I never otherwise would have met, and the space to know myself better and what I'm capable of. The process forced me to look inward at what I really wanted and why, to empower me with the skills to make it happen, as well as a network of amazing individuals to fall back on.
Why is sustainability leadership important?
We need strong and influential leaders to navigate the complex path toward a sustainable future and to inspire others to get on board. We need collective action, without which we're in trouble.
What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?
I'll keep learning, collaborating, talking, helping, pushing and trying to find ways that we can do things better.
What are three words you would use to describe the Fellowship Program?
Game changing, inspiring.
