Heather Smillie

Zoo Events and Programs Presenter, Melbourne Zoo2015 Melbourne Fellowship

I started to truly believe that I could make a difference, that I was worthy.

What was the most valuable thing you got out of CSL?

I started to truly believe that I could make a difference, that I was worthy

Why are you passionate about sustainability? What was the moment or event that made you decide to become a ‘change maker’ in your field?

My ultimate life-long goal is to help rediscover how humans can live in harmony with each other and with the earth. We were doing it for tens of thousands of years, but somehow we’ve forgotten how to do it in the last couple hundred years. I want to be part of the movement that comes back to a simple lifestyle of love and care for each other and the earth.

How did CSL play a role in directing your current path or project?

I started the year with a lot of passion and impatience to get on with it… I just had no idea what ‘it’ was. Thanks to the prompting and support of CSL, I have found so much clarity around what exactly it is that drives me, and how that can translate into worthwhile work.

In 25 words or less, tell us why leadership for sustainability is important.

The earth is in serious trouble and it is in our power to turn it all around but we need everyone to stand up and lead the change.

What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?

Right now I’m doing a permaculture design course and over the next couple years I will be studying a Master of Agricultural Science at Melbourne University. After that I hope to move to country Victoria to establish my own little permaculture paradise and start working to transform the Agricultural sector. I don’t know what that will look like, or how it will all work, but I am bloody excited to get started.

What are three words you would use to describe the Fellowship Program?

Transformative, supportive, hysterical
