Transformational leadership is required to improve the way we think, interact and live

What was the most valuable thing you got out of CSL?

I met like-minded sustainability professionals from across Australia, and they became my friends.

Why are you passionate about sustainability? What was the moment or event that made you decide to become a 'change maker' in your field?

I have always had a strong innate drive to make the most of my potential, and the potential of those around me. This drive led to me being active in school and university. But even though I was very involved in committees and groups, I was still looking away from society’s hardest sustainability questions – on the excuse that change could wait until I was older. I assumed that I needed to be in a position of authority to initiate social change. That’s until I went to a youth peace conference in Japan, where I met change makers who were fighting injustice, founding organisations, leading change in their communities – even though they were younger than me! They inspired me to take action, and over the following year I went on to help set up a mobile street library for the homeless and advocate on behalf of children’s rights.

Why is leadership for sustainability important?

Transformational leadership is required to improve the way we think, interact and live so we can maximise, rather than compromise, the opportunities for current and future generations.

What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?

My immediate interest is in climate change policy, which I believe is one of the most significant challenges facing my generation. I also plan to contribute to a range of public policy issues that increase Australia’s long-term resilience and sustainability. Whether that’s through continuing in the public service, working for a think tank or conducting further study, I know my work will continue to have a sustainability focus, partly because it is such a cross-cutting issue, but also because it is vitally important. I am passionate about creating a better world for present and future generations, and sustainability is at the heart of that dream.
