Daan Schiebaan
Environment Manager, The University of Newcastle2018 Hunter Central Coast SLDP
Continue to teach my young children the wonder and importance of the natural environment!
What was the most valuable thing you got out of the program?
I was able to take a refreshing approach at my commitment to sustainability and meet a dedicated group of talented people!
Why are you passionate about sustainability? What was the moment or event that made you decide to become a ‘change maker’ in your field?
I want to play my part in creating a better world. There is always a way forward and my strength is to see numerous sides in the sustainability journey and make change happen.
I made this decision as I was growing up in and around the bush in northern Sydney, and having a deep connection with our ocean that remains strong until this day.
When I was 18, I traveled around Australia and witnessed the immense beauty of our country. I was opened up to the possibilities of contributing to making a better natural environment and started my professional journey at this time. Moving to the Northern Rivers of NSW in those formative years was instrumental in this important commitment.
How did the program play a role in directing your current path or project?
An increased understanding of the Hunter Region, our indigenous culture, deep personal reflection and to network with a wonderful group of dedicated individuals.
In 25 words or less, tell us why leadership for sustainability is important.
Sustainability is about positive change.
Change will only happen with inspiring leaders being able to take the people along this journey, in a balanced way.
What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?
Professionally, keep striving for the change I am passionate about across environmental sustainability. Personally continue to connect with the CSL group, and continue to teach my young children the wonder and importance of the natural environment!
What are three words you would use to describe the Program?
Confronting, personal and networks!
