Chantelle Leenstra

Principal Landscape Architect & Horticulturist, Garden Atelier.2015 Sydney Fellowship

Chantelle Leenstra ps

Finite resources and climate change mean that we urgently need leaders with the awareness, drive and skills to make sustainability a priority in every field.

What was the most valuable thing you got out of CSL?

I got clear about my values and key drivers and connected with a beautiful support tribe.

Why are you passionate about sustainability? What was the moment or event that made you decide to become a ‘change maker’ in your field?

I am passionate about connecting people with gardens in order to support people's wellbeing in urban environments. This grounding connection to nature influences people to express their best selves and can translate into positive contributions to a more environmentally and socially sustainable world across many different fields.

There wasn't a moment or event that made me decide to become a 'change maker'. Even as a child, I have always been the kind of person who actively seeks out positive change, improvement and innovation, so applying that mindset to my professional work as a garden designer and horticulturist was an inevitable progression.

How did CSL play a role in directing your current path or project?

CSL has grounded me in some of the harsh environmental realities facing our future world. Because of this, I am now more driven to investigate the creation of gardens that need minimal inputs to flourish in Sydney.

In 25 words or less, tell us why leadership for sustainability is important.

Finite resources and climate change mean that we urgently need leaders with the awareness, drive and skills to make sustainability a priority in every field.

What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?

I am launching Garden Atelier, a garden design studio dedicated to sustainability, innovation and collaboration.

What are three words you would use to describe the Fellowship Program?

Self-exploration. Support. Expression.
