Casey Van Reyk

Owner-Operator, Fifty Records and The Jazz Diaries2015 Sydney Fellowship

I feel it is my duty to be passionate about sustainability.

What was the most valuable thing you got out of CSL?

I discovered the power of story-telling in connecting people and bringing about change

Why are you passionate about sustainability? What was the moment or event that made you decide to become a ‘change maker’ in your field?

I feel it is my duty to be passionate about sustainability. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to preserve and protect nature and animals. I think for me, becoming vegetarian and then vegan in my early twenties was my turning point. That's when I really started to care about animals and the environment, and I've been doing my best to make positive contributions since then.

How did CSL play a role in directing your current path or project?

As a 30 year old woman, I still feel like I'm trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up! CSL has given me knowledge, support, ideas, and encouragement to discover how I will align my skills with my passion. I can't say I've totally figured it out, but I feel equipped with the tools to do so!

In 25 words or less, tell us why leadership for sustainability is important.

We need huge, global changes if we are going to turn things around for planet Earth! Making our lives and the structure of society more sustainable is going to be a big job, so it's absolutely paramount that we have strong leadership in this area.

What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?

I'm at a discovery stage in my journey - trying new things, opening new doors, and testing the waters. I'm starting with volunteer work around animals but who knows where I will end up - stay tuned!

What are three words you would use to describe the Fellowship Program?

Informative, inspiring, compassionate
